Composition: Piperacillin and Tazobactam
Strengths: 2.25gm, 4.5gm
Dosage From: Powder for reconstitution for injection or infusion.
Pharmacodynamics: Piprecilin (Piperacillin and Tazobactam) for injection is an injectable antibacterial combination product consisting of the semisynthetic antibacterial Piperacillin sodium and the beta-lactamase inhibitor Tazobactum sodium for I.V. administration. Piperacillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin, exerts bactericidal activity by inhibiting septum formation and cell wall synthesis of susceptible bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics: Piprecilin is an injectable combination of two antibiotics. Piperacillin and Tazobactam, with broad spectrum activity against an extended range of bacterial species. Piperacillin is an extended-spectrum penicillin antibiotic, but it can be destroyed by an enzyme produced by bacteria called beta lactamase. Tazobactam inhibits beta lactamase and prevents the destruction of piperacillin. Therefore, tazobactam is given with piperacillin to enhance the activity of piperacillin in eradicating bacterial infections.
In-vitro studies of Piperacillin and Tazobactam have shown that the combination has activity against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerotic and anaerobic bacteria.
Indications:
Dosage:
Contraindications: Piprecilin is contraindicated in patients with a history of allergic reactions to any of the penicillin’s, cephalosporins, or β-lactamase inhibitors.
Warnings and Precautions: Piperacillin and Tazobactam cross the placenta in humans. However, there are insufficient data with piperacillin and / or tazobactam in pregnant women to inform a drug-associated risk for major birth defects and miscarriage.
