Composition: Paracetamol IV infusion

Strengths: 1000mg/100ml

Dosage From: Injection for I. V. use

Indications:

  • Post-surgical pain The precise mechanism of the analgesic and antipyretic properties of paracetamol has yet to be established. However, Paracetamol is a weak inhibitor of the synthesis of Prostaglandins (PGs).
  • Pharmacokinetics:
    • Bioavailability: 10mg/ml
    • Cmax: 30ug/ml
    • Tmax: 15 Min

Pharmacology:

  • 1. Pharmacodynamics
  • 2. Short-term treatment of pain and fever.

Dosage: Paracetamol IV 1000mg/100ml.

  • The minimum interval between each administration must be at least 4 hours.
  • The minimum interval between each administration in patients with severe renal insufficiency must be at least 6 hours.
  • No more than 4 doses to be given in 24 hours.

Preparation:

  • For IV doses of 1000 mg: May administer without further dilution;
  • May administer by inserting a vented IV set through the septum of the vial.

Contraindications:

  • Acute Liver Failure
  • Liver Problems
  • Severe Renal Impairment
  • Shock
  • Acute Inflammation of the Liver due to Hepatitis C Virus

Warnings and Precautions: Renal Impairment: Paracetamol should be administered with caution to patients with renal impairment.
Hepatic Impairment: Paracetamol should be administered with caution to patients with hepatic impairment. Hepatic impairment may decrease may decrease the clearance of paracetamol or increase the probability of hepatic toxicity.

Pregnancy: Epidemiological data from the use of paracetamol indicate no undesirable effects in pregnancy or on the health of the fetus/newborn infant.

Lactation: Analgesics such as paracetamol are considered to be ‘safe’, due to low transfer into breast milk.

Storage and Handling Instructions: Cool, dry, place, protected from light in greater than 30°C. Do not refrigerate. Discard vial immediately after use.
